YouthSight’s research was recently featured in the widely distributed ISSUES book, which covers social issues in depth, for 16 – 18 year olds. YouthSight are on a mission to understand young people and help institutions improve the student experience. By collecting views, opinions and reported behaviour from students we are often able to provide a really useful picture of a market.
Last year we helped Which? and the Higher Education Policy Institute report how long students spend doing what they’re meant to do; studying. We asked students to report the time they spent in timetabled study and also doing their own private study in the library, etc. The results showed that there was a great deal of variability in the amount and type of scheduled teaching in UK universities. In fact, 29% of students felt their course wasn’t good value for money (compared to only 16% in 2006 when tuition fees were substantially smaller).
The 17,000 interviews of 1st – 4th year students, studying 385 different subjects raise an important question – what’s the value of a UK degree if there is so much variability amongst teaching in university courses?
Our research yields benefits far beyond the school environment – the current volume reaches a much wider audience including; higher education institutions, counselling and social care providers, and young offenders’ institutions.YouthSight are proud to be able to help young people with their academic choices by conduction research on current topics, such as revealing the reality of student lives and workloads. We feel it is important that this information should be transparent and easily available, to allow students to make the right choice for them.
